The Audio-Visual Forum: A Platform for Innovation

During the annual Film Music Festival in Krakow, we host the Audio-Visual Forum. This event features a series of panels and workshops tailored for industry professionals from around the globe. We delve into essential topics such as music production, technology, innovation, composition, and copyright. These subjects are particularly relevant for music creators and performers in today's rapidly evolving landscape.

A Focus on Collaboration

One of this year’s panels centred on collaboration in music. I had the immense privilege of joining Hugh Brunt for a conversation and deep dive into projects with the London Contemporary Orchestra. We discussed how they blend electronic music with orchestral sound. Their incredibly advanced and creative playing techniques showcase the power of collaboration.

The London Contemporary Orchestra continues to shape the sound of some of the most compelling projects in recent years. Their innovative approach has garnered attention and respect within the industry.

The ECHO Project: A Case Study

Hugh and the LCO musicians played a crucial role in the success of the ECHO Project. We introduced ECHO to the composers and analysed Volker Bertelmann's scores from an immersive thinking perspective. This analysis encouraged the involvement of the spatial aspect in the compositional process.

The ECHO Project exemplifies how collaboration can lead to groundbreaking results. By merging different musical styles and techniques, the project has created a unique listening experience.

Looking Ahead: Planning the Next Audio-Visual Forum

In the meantime, I am planning the next Audio-Visual Forum. If you are interested in presenting your technology, giving a talk, or joining a discussion on relevant topics around music production, please reach out! We are also open to industrial partnerships.

Building relationships with fellow musicians, composers, and industry experts can lead to exciting projects. These connections can also provide valuable insights into industry trends and innovations.

Embracing Technology in Music Production

Technology plays a significant role in modern music production. From software to hardware, advancements have transformed how music is created and shared. Embracing these technologies can enhance creativity and streamline the production process.

At the Audio-Visual Forum, we explore the latest tools and techniques. This knowledge empowers music creators to push boundaries and experiment with new sounds.

The Future of Music Collaboration

As the music industry evolves, collaboration will remain essential. Artists and professionals must adapt to changes and seek new partnerships. By working together, we can create innovative music that resonates with audiences.

The Audio-Visual Forum serves as a catalyst for these collaborations. It brings together diverse voices and perspectives, fostering an environment of creativity and exploration.

A Collaborative Research Project on 3D Microphone Array Techniques for Orchestral Recording

WE AIM TO:

  • Advance immersive sound recording techniques for orchestral music.

  • Bridge the gap between academia and the audio industry.

  • Share expert knowledge and high-quality immersive recording resources to support education and research.

  • Study perceptual differences across various recording techniques.

  • Inspire current and future sound engineers, composers and researchers to explore immersive audio.

WE PLAN TO:

  • Form a focus group of leading engineers and researchers specialising in immersive orchestral recording.

  • Compose an orchestral piece that incorporates a variety of musical styles, instrumentations, dynamics, and textures.

  • Record the piece simultaneously with different immersive arrays designed by the expert engineers at Lyndhurst Hall, AIR Studios in London.

  • Hold a listening and discussion session at the Dolby Soho screening room, involving both the focus group and additional participants.

  • Create an open-access database of the recordings to share with the public.

  • Publish the project outcomes in the AES Journal.

  • Present the outcomes with demonstrations at future events.

Follow the project on Instagram / Facebook / BlueSky to keep up to date, get access to the recording database and read about the results of the research.
